Texans-Saints postgame notes

Posted by Nick Scurfield on August 20, 2011 – 10:42 pm

Postgame notes from the Texans’ 27-14 preseason victory over the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night at Reliant Stadium:

· Paid Attendance: 70,828

· The win improved the Texans to 2-0 during the 2011 preseason.  It marks the third time under head coach Gary Kubiak that the Texans have won their first two preseason contests.  The team also did so in 2006 and 2008.

· The win gives the Texans a 3-2 edge over the Saints in the all-time preseason series.

· The win improved head coach Gary Kubiak’s career preseason record to 12-10 and 7-5 at home.

· The win improved Houston’s all-time preseason record against NFC South opponents to 5-9.  Houston has played the NFC South more than any division in preseason action.

· The Texans set a team preseason record for total offense with 436 yards in the game.  The previous high was 417 yards vs. Tampa Bay on 9/2/10.

· The Texans also set a team preseason rushing record with 208 yards on the ground.  The previous high was 187 rushing yards at Denver on 8/27/04.

· Houston won the turnover battle, forcing three turnovers without giving the ball away.  Houston has now forced four turnovers in two preseason games after forcing five in the entire 2010 preseason.

· Houston won the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 32:57.

· Houston was a perfect 2-of-2 in goal-to-go situations.  Thus far in the preseason, Houston has converted all four goal-to-go situations.

· Houston’s 27 points were tied for the fourth-most scored in a preseason game and were the most since the Texans scored 27 at Tampa Bay on 9/4/09.

· Houston’s 6.1-yard rushing average as a team was the second-highest in team preseason history.  The only game in which the Texans averaged more yards per carry was 8/19/06 at St. Louis when the Texans rushed for 143 yards on 21 attempts, a 6.8-yard average.

· Houston’s 24 first-half points were the most in the opening 30 minutes in team history.  The previous high was 21 vs. Dallas on 8/25/07.

· Houston’s 24 first-half points were more than the team scored in any complete preseason game since 9/4/09 at Tampa Bay, a 27-20 win.

· Houston scored on its first four possessions in the first half, scoring three touchdowns and a field goal.

· The total paid attendance for tonight’s game was 70,828, which marked the 92nd home sellout in team history.  The Texans have sold out every home game, including preseason and regular season, in franchise history.

· The announced crowd of 70,828 was the largest for a preseason game in team history, topping the previous high of 70,725 set in 2010 vs. Dallas (8/28/10).

· The captains for tonight’s game were QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson.

· The Saints won the toss and elected to receive.

· ILB Xavier Adibi led the team with six tackles, including three solos.

· Rookie DE Scooter Berry recovered a fumble in the third quarter and returned it 23 yards.

· RB Arian Foster scored on a one-yard touchdown run on Houston’s opening drive to give the Texans a 7-0 lead.  The touchdown was Houston’s second off of a turnover this preseason.

· Foster scored again on a 28-yard touchdown on Houston’s second drive.  It was the first time a Texans running back rushed for a pair of touchdowns in preseason play since 8/19/06 when Vernand Morency did so at St. Louis.

· Foster became the second Texans running back in as many games to score a pair of touchdowns.  RB Chris Ogbonnaya scored a rushing and a receiving touchdown in the preseason opener vs. the New York Jets (8/15).

· Foster finished the night with five carries for 47 yards and two touchdowns to go along with one catch for six yards.

· Rookie P Brett Hartmann booted three touchbacks on four kickoff attempts.

· WR Andre Johnson caught four passes for 100 yards in the first half.  His 100 receiving yards tied for the second-most in team preseason history.  WR Jacoby Jones had 148 yards on three catches on 9/4/09 at Tampa Bay and WR Kevin Walter had 100 yards on six catches on 8/16/08 at New Orleans.

· CB Brice McCain intercepted a pass from Saints QB Chase Daniel in the third quarter and returned the pick 18 yards.  It was Houston’s first interception of the 2011 preseason.

· K Neil Rackers connected on a 49-yard field goal in the second quarter to remain perfect on the preseason.  Dating back to 2010, Rackers hit his first eight preseason field goal attempts as a Texan before missing on a 34-yard attempt in the third quarter.

· OLB Brooks Reed sacked Saints QB Chase Daniel for an 18-yard loss in the third quarter and forced a fumble on the play.  It was Houston’s second forced fumble of the game and the defense’s fourth of the 2011 preseason.

· Reed sacked Daniel for a 17-yard loss in the third quarter and forced a fumble on the play, giving him two sacks and two forced fumbles in the game.

· QB Matt Schaub completed his first seven pass attempts before a tipped pass halted the streak in the second quarter.

· Schaub finished the night 12-of-16 for 163 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions, giving him a passer rating of 107.0.

· DE Antonio Smith sacked New Orleans QB Drew Brees and forced a fumble to end the Saints’ opening drive.  It was the team’s eighth sack of the season, which matched the team’s total from the 2010 preseason.

· Second-year RB Ben Tate saw his first action in more than a year after he suffered a broken ankle on his first carry of the 2010 preseason.

· Tate scored on a four-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.  It was his first touchdown in the NFL.

· Tate finished the first half with 95 yards on nine carries and a touchdown.  His 95 rushing yards were the second-most by a Texan in a preseason game, trailing only the 110 yards by RB Arian Foster last year vs. Dallas (8/28/10).

· OLB Mario Williams recovered a fumble on New Orleans’ first drive of the game.  It was his first fumble recovery of the 2011 preseason and was the first of three takeaways on the night for the Texans defense.

Parsing Kubiak’s day-after presser

Posted by Nick Scurfield on December 14, 2010 – 5:21 pm

Texans coach Gary Kubiak met with the media on Tuesday for his day-after-a-game press conference at 3:30 p.m. CT at Reliant Stadium.

Here are the highlights:

  • Kubiak said that the Texans are “beat up” and “paid a big price” for last night’s game. “It was a very physical football game, and we’re going to have to make some changes here and have some new guys step up,” Kubiak said. He listed defensive end Mario Williams (sports hernia), wide receiver David Anderson (shoulder) and guard Mike Brisiel (calf) as players with injury issues.
  • Kubiak, on the possibility of shutting down Williams for the remainder of the season: “If Mario can help us win, (if) he can play 25-30 plays which he played last night, then we want him to play and we’ll do everything we can to get him to gameday. If our doctors think that it’s not possible and we would hurt Mario in the long haul, then we will do what’s right by Mario. So that continues to be evaluated.” Williams has yet to miss a game in his five-year career.
  • Kubiak explained his decision to call two passing plays in overtime from the Texans’ nine-yard line, instead of running the ball with Arian Foster. “I thought we had a lot of momentum in what we were doing,” he said. “We had their nickel on the field. We had had their nickel on the field for two big, big drives in the fourth quarter and thought that we had a little advantage there, but obviously it didn’t work out that way. I wasn’t scared to be aggressive backed up. Matt (Schaub) handles that good.”
  • Kubiak said that the Texans should have double-teamed defensive tackle Haloti Ngata on the final play. The Texans were in max protection, but Ngata got free up the middle and pressured Schaub into throwing the game-ending pick-six.
  • Kubiak said that personnel changes have created a “huge challenge” for special teams coordinator Joe Marciano, leading to uncharacteristic struggles in kick coverage and on returns this season. “There’ve been a lot of changes on special teams and a lot of kids that are so-called leaders on special teams that are now being called upon to be starters on defense and those type of things, so Joe’s losing some of that production,” Kubiak said. Safety Dominique Barber is out for the season on injured reserve. Special teams captain Kevin Bentley has become the starting middle linebacker, and rookie Darryl Sharpton has become the starting weakside linebacker. Linebacker Xavier Adibi has missed several games with a hamstring injury.
  • With the playoffs all but out of reach, Kubiak was asked what goals the Texans have left to play for in the final three games. “Our goals are week-to-week, to win a game,” he said. “Obviously, we started this season with the hopes of being a playoff team for the first time in this franchise’s history. I don’t think mathematically we’re eliminated, and I could be wrong, but it’s very, very difficult right now. We need to go to Tennessee and find a way to win a game.”
