Casey hosts “Lunch with a Texan”

Posted by Nick Scurfield on February 22, 2011 – 10:33 am

Tight end James Casey, the Texans Community Player of the Year presented by Whataburger, sat down with a couple of lucky Texans fans for lunch at Reliant Stadium last week.

Larry and Lina Gong, Texans season-ticket holders since 2002, won the chance to have “Lunch with a Texan” in the team cafeteria by voting for the Whataburger award in December. They also received a tour of the team facilities.

“It was really nice,” Larry Gong said. “I recognized a lot of the faces and I got to meet Rick Smith, the general manage, so it’s like I’m part of the family today. I’ve been a season ticket holder since day one. I love the Texans, and I’m hoping for bigger and better things in 2011 here.”

Casey was one of four 2010 Texans Community Player of the Month presented by Whataburger winners. He participated in the All-Pro Dad program and provided 10 season tickets to Boys and Girls Country, a Christian home for children from families in crisis, through the Texans’ TACT program. Casey also worked with the Houston Fire Department to promote awareness of fire safety and prevention.

“I feel like as an NFL player, we’re kind of responsible to give back to the community and to help out when we can,” Casey said. “I realize I’m not like a superstar player, but I do try to keep things in perspective. I know I’m very lucky to be playing in the NFL and there are millions of people that want to and I’m very fortunate to be doing this.

“It’s obviously an honor being the Whataburger Community Player of the Year, but it was real fun to be able to meet some of the fans and have them come in our facility and take a look at some things. It was great to talk to Larry and see his perspective on what it’s like going to a game. Then he showed me his seats were, and he’s got fantastic seats. I’ll be seeing a lot of him, hopefully, next year. He’s right there in the front, so I’ll get to talk to him a lot.”

Texans Tuesday appearances

Posted by Nick Scurfield on October 12, 2010 – 11:20 am

In weekly Tuesday fashion, fans will have a couple of chances to meet Texans players this evening.

Safety Dominique Barber and defensive end Mario Williams will be at the Whataburger on 214 E. Parkwood Ave., Friendswood, from 6-7 p.m. Barber is the Texans Community Player of the Month presented by Whataburger. He was nominated by Williams. Due to time constraints, there is no guarantee for an autograph at the event.

Free safety Troy Nolan, who got his first-career NFL start on Sunday against the Giants, will be signing autographs at the Go Texan Store at Reliant Stadium from 6-7 p.m. A Texans player appears at the team store every Tuesday after a home game.
