Posted by Nick Scurfield on August 31, 2012 – 11:06 am

Courtesy of the Texans’ award-winning communications staff, postgame notes from the Texans’ 28-24 preseason victory over the Minnesota Vikings at Reliant Stadium on Thursday night:

•    Houston finished the preseason 3-1 for the second season in a row and third time in franchise history. The Texans were also 3-1 in 2006.

•    Houston recorded its first victory over Minnesota in franchise history, including preseason and regular-season games. The Texans are 0-2 against the Vikings all-time in regular-season action and are now 1-2 in preseason play.

•    Head Coach Gary Kubiak improved his career preseason record to 16-12 overall and 9-5 at home.

•    Houston recorded six sacks in the game to bring its team preseason total to 17, surpassing the former franchise preseason record of 15, set in 2011. 4.5 of the six sacks came from rookies: OLB Delano Johnson (1.5), OLB D.J. Bryant (2.0) and OLB Whitney Mercilus (1.0).

•    Houston opened the game with a six-play, 83-yard drive that took 2:59. RB Justin Forsett capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, his first of the preseason. Forsett had two carries for 55 yards on the drive.

•    QB John Beck started the game and finished the first half 6-of-10 passing for 149 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions for a 137.5 passer rating. He did not play after halftime.

•    Beck connected with rookie WR DeVier Posey for an 80-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. It was the second-longest completion in franchise preseason history. QB Rex Grossman hooked up with WR Jacoby Jones for an 87-yard touchdown pass against Tampa Bay on Sept. 4, 2009.

•    RB Justin Forsett set a franchise single-game rushing record with 13 carries for 114 yards. The previous preseason single-game rushing record was 110 yards on eight carries by Arian Foster against Dallas on August 28, 2010.

•    Forsett’s 52-yard run on the first offensive series was the longest in Texans preseason history. The previous long was 46 yards by RB Ahman Green against Dallas on August 25, 2007, and by RB Antowain Smith against Tampa Bay on August 31, 2006.

•    WR Trindon Holliday took a punt back 76 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, his third return touchdown of the preseason. Holliday had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Carolina on August 11 and then took a punt back 87 yards for a score against San Francisco on August 18.

•    Holliday finished the 2012 preseason with a combined 570 yards and three touchdowns on kickoff and punt returns. Holliday had 10 punt returns for 211 yards (21.2 average) and two touchdowns. He also had nine kickoff returns for 359 yards (39.9 average) and one touchdown.

•    WR DeVier Posey finished the night with two receptions for 93 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown reception. Posey’s 93 yards are the fourth-highest single-game receiving total in franchise preseason history.

•    Posey’s 80-yard touchdown reception fromBeck was the second-longest by a Texan in franchise preseason history. Posey’s touchdown grab was his first of the 2012 preseason and his first catch at as a pro.

Game over: Texans lose 28-0

Posted by Nick Scurfield on September 1, 2011 – 8:52 pm

MINNEAPOLIS — The Texans lost 28-0 to the Vikings in their preseason finale at Mall of America Field. They finished the preseason 3-1.

The Vikings scored on a seven-yard touchdown run by Caleb King in the final minute of the fourth quarter, King’s second of the game. Texans rookie quarterback T.J. Yates finished 6-of-13 with an interception and lost fumble in the second half, good for a 33.2 passer rating.

The closest that the Texans got to scoring in the second half came on their second drive of the fourth quarter. They started the drive at their own 47-yard line after a punt, but they turned the ball over on downs on fourth-and-three from the Minnesota 46. Yates’ pass for rookie wide receiver Jeff Maehl fell incomplete to force the turnover on downs.

Check back with us shortly for articles, quotes, videos from the locker room, photos, podcasts and more from tonight’s game.
