Texans All Access today

Posted by drewdougherty on June 26, 2012 – 9:30 am

It may be late June, but today’s Texans All Access from noon to 2 p.m. is jam-packed with guests.

The headliner is rookie wide receiver DeVier Posey, who will share with fans how his OTA’s and minicamp went, and what he’s doing to get ready for training camp at the end of July. He’ll also reveal who one of his mentors is, and the name might surprise you.

Former nose tackle Seth Payne will hop on the show as well, and he’ll share his insight on the direction the 2012 defense is headed and much more.

Also, Illinois defensive line coach Keith Gilmore will phone in to chat about first rounder Whitney Mercilus. Gilmore coached Mercilus in Champaign, but he also coached Texans outside linebacker Connor Barwin in college at Cincinnati. He has a unique insight into what those two players are able to do, as well as how they’ve developed.

On top of all that, the ongoing ‘Opponent Preview’ series will take us to Green Bay where we’ll chat with Packers’ beat writer Tyler Dunne.

Don’t miss it from noon to 2 p.m. today on SportsRadio 610, HoustonTexans.com or the Houston Texans mobile app.

Connor Barwin on Whitney Mercilus, Brooks Reed, 2012 and more

Posted by Nick Scurfield on May 16, 2012 – 2:18 pm

Connor Barwin was the featured guest on “Texans All Access” on Tuesday afternoon on SportsRadio 610 AM. The fourth-year outside linebacker had plenty of interesting things to say in his hour-long studio visit – ranging from his thoughts on Co-Marshaling the Houston Art Car Parade on Saturday to looking like Kramer from ‘Seinfeld’ to these nuggets:

On what’s ahead for him after 11.5 sacks in 2011: “I’m very excited. When Reggie (Herring) and Wade (Phillips) came in, they kind of taught me a new way to pass rush a little bit. So now I have a year under my belt. I’ve completely kind of forgotten about the ankle injury and moved past that. I think another thing’s that going to help this season was drafting (Whitney) Mercilus, because I think that’ll give me and Brooks (Reed) a better rotation. Rushing the passer, you can say 70 percent or a lot of times is just hustle, and when you’re out there fresh, which there were times last season when we necessarily weren’t, should definitely give us an advantage into this season.”

On first-round pick Whitney Mercilus’ role: “Fortunately for him, he’ll play the Will, I think, behind me and then we’ll rotate. And then I think early on, we’ll see how much he can mentally grasp… Early on, he’ll just be rushing primarily, which will be nice. It’s just going to be catching on to learning the defense and just getting in there and rotating with all of us.”

On second-year outside linebacker Brooks Reed: “He’s the strongest guy on our team, probably, right now. He’s having a great offseason. Like me, he came in here and we were just learning the way that Wade and Reggie are teaching us how to pass rush. With another year under his belt, the sky’s the limit for him.”

On Texans left tackle Duane Brown: “I think he’s one of the best offensive tackles in the league and also one of the most underrated tackles in the league. He blocks me a lot in practice. He definitely gets me ready for the games… He mixes aggressiveness with athleticism. There’s a lot of left tackles out there, a lot of the good ones that people say are good like Joe Staley and Jake Long, they’re real athletic and they drop and they play with you and that kind of thing, but they don’t ever really attack you too hard… Duane kind of mixes both of ‘em, so you’ve always got to be ready for him.”

On if the Texans’ defense talks about wanting to rank No. 1 in the league: “No, we don’t talk about ranking, but they do say if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. So, that only leaves one spot for us to be next year.”

Undrafted rookie S Eddie Pleasant already has a nickname: “The Missile”

Posted by Nick Scurfield on May 16, 2012 – 9:27 am

In a very informative appearance on “Texans All Access” on Tuesday on SportsRadio 610, Texans special teams coordinator Joe Marciano gave a glowing review of rookie safety Eddie Pleasant.

Pleasant, an undrafted free agent from Oregon, was previously mentioned by general manager Rick Smith as a player the Texans had contemplated drafting. Marciano seconded that notion, and then some.

“We’ve got Eddie Pleasant, who we really liked,” Marciano said in response to a question about UDFAs who could make an impact on special teams. “We thought we were going to draft him. That’s another story for another day, but we had him and his card was picked; we were ready to take him. I already gave him a nickname. His name is ‘The Missile.’ He seeks in on the target and he just takes off and hits it. He’s a very, very exciting player. I’m excited about him to come in and see what he can do.”

Pleasant (5-10, 211) was a three-year starter at Oregon, starting his career as a linebacker and emergency running back. He didn’t play safety until his junior year with the Ducks but blossomed as a senior in 2011, recording 61 tackles, three interceptions and 11 passes defensed en route to first-team All-Pac 12 honors. He posted a 4.63 40-yard dash, 33.5-inch vertical jump and 22 bench press reps of 225 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The Texans currently have eight safeties on the roster: 2011 starters Danieal Manning and Glover Quin; 2011 contributors Troy Nolan, Quintin Demps and Shiloh Keo; 2011 practice squad player Torri Williams; and undrafted rookies Pleasant and Desmond Marrow (Toledo).

Four safeties were on the Texans’ active roster on opening day in 2011 (Manning, Quin, Nolan and Dominique Barber). There could be room for five this year, since the Texans had seven cornerbacks in Week 1 last season and now have only six corners on the roster. It’ll be a tough group to crack, but it certainly sounds like Pleasant has a legitimate chance.
