Texans-Browns postgame notes

Posted by Nick Scurfield on November 7, 2011 – 11:26 am

A day later, here are the postgame notes from Houston’s 30-12 Week 9 victory over the Cleveland Browns at Reliant Stadium, courtesy of the Texans’ communications staff.

THE WIN…

* Improved the Texans’ record to 6-3, putting them three games above .500 for the first time in franchise history. It is also the team’s best record through nine games.

* Gave the Texans their first three-game win streak during a season since the end of the 2009 season when they won four in a row from 12/13/09-1/3/10.

* Improved Head Coach Gary Kubiak’s record to 43-46 overall.

* Improved the Texans’ record against Cleveland to 4-3 overall and 3-1 under Kubiak.

* Improved Houston’s record at Reliant Stadium to 4-1 on the season and 28-17 under Kubiak.

TEAM NOTES…

* Houston set a franchise record for rushing yards in a game with 261. The previous high was 257 last season vs. Indianapolis (9/12/10).

* The Texans had two players with more than 100 rushing yards in the same game for the second time in the last three weeks after doing so at Tennessee on 10/23. Prior to this year, the Texans had never had two 100-yard rushers in the same game.

* Houston became the sixth team since 1985 to have a pair of rushers top 100 yards in the same game twice in a season. The last teams to do so was Tennessee (Chris Johnson, LenDale White) and Carolina (Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams) in 2008.

* The Texans’ three rushing touchdowns tied a club single-game record. It was the ninth time Houston rushed for three scores in a game and the first time since 1/2/11 vs. Jacksonville.

* The Texans had three players score rushing touchdowns in the same game for the second time in team history. The only other game in which three Texans ran for scores was on 12/13/07 vs. Denver, when FB Vonta Leach, QB Sage Rosenfels and RB Ron Dayne did so.

* The Texans outrushed the Browns 261-44. It was the sixth game this season and the third in a row that Houston has outrushed its opponent. The Texans are 5-1 in those games this season and are 34-13 under Kubiak when outrushing the opposition.

* The Texans ran the ball 40 times in the game, improving their record when rushing 30 or more times to 6-0 this season and 29-3 under Kubiak.

* The Texans defense held its opponent below 200 total yards of offense for the third consecutive game.

* The Texans held their opponent under 20 points for the sixth time this season and improved to 6-0 in those games this year and 27-1 under Kubiak.

* The Texans scored on their opening possession for the sixth time this season and scored a touchdown on the first drive of the game for the fifth time this year.

* Houston’s opening drive consumed 5:10 off the game clock. The Texans also had drives of 7:19 and 6:33 which each ended in field goals in the second half. The drives were Houston’s 18th, 19th and 20th of the season that lasted more than five minutes.

* The Texans scored a touchdown following a first-quarter fumble recovery and a field goal following a second-quarter interception, giving them 76 points off of 16 takeaways this season. Houston has converted 12 of its 16 takeaways into points.

* The Texans had a positive turnover margin for the sixth time this season, taking the ball away twice while committing one turnover. Houston is 4-2 this season when posting a positive turnover margin and 25-7 under Kubiak.

* Houston won time of possession for the eighth time this season and improved to 6-2 in those games this year and 35-17 under Kubiak.

* The Texans led after the first quarter for the eighth time in nine games this season, at halftime for the seventh time, and after three quarters for the eighth time.

* The Texans defense its streak of consecutive games with an interception to eight in a row.

* The Texans scored on their first possession of the second half for the fourth consecutive game. The drive was capped by a 21-yard field goal.

* Total paid attendance was 71,511. It marked the 97th consecutive home sellout for the Texans. Houston has sold out every home game, including preseason and regular-season contests, in franchise history. The crowd was the second-largest in team history behind the 71,585 earlier this year vs. Pittsburgh (10/2).

* The Texans won the toss and elected to receive.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES…

* Head Coach Gary Kubiak successfully challenged a play in the fourth quarter which was ruled a fumble on the field. Kubiak improved to 1-3 this season and 11-25 in his career.

* Rookie OLB Mister Alexander made his NFL debut after being signed off of the Texans practice squad earlier this week. Alexander finished the game with a team-leading two special teams tackles.

* OLB Connor Barwin registered his third sack of the season when he tackled Cleveland QB Colt McCoy for a 4-yard loss in the third quarter.

* NT Shaun Cody started his 50th career game, 38 of which have come in the last three years with the Texans. Cody intercepted a pass to thwart Cleveland’s two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter.

* ILB Brian Cushing registered his second sack of the season when he tackled Cleveland QB Colt McCoy for no gain in the second quarter. The sack gave Cushing 7.5 for his career.

* Cushing led the team with seven tackles, including four solos, to go along with his sack, one tackle for loss and a quarterback hit. It was the seventh time this season that Cushing either led the team or tied for the team lead in tackles.

* TE Owen Daniels caught a 12-yard pass in the first quarter, extending his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 62.

* FS Quintin Demps made his second career interception and his first as a Texan when he picked off Cleveland QB Colt McCoy late in the second quarter and returned it 42 yards. His previous interception came on 11/1/09 vs. the New York Giants as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

* Demps’ 42-yard return was the Texans’ longest of the season, bettering a 38-yard return by CB Brice McCain on 10/23 at Tennessee.

* RB Arian Foster registered his 13th career 100-yard game and his fourth of the season. He topped 100 yards on his 11th carry of the game and finished with 124 yards on 19 carries.

* Foster has topped 100 rushing yards in three consecutive games and in 10 of his 13 career starts at Reliant Stadium.

* Foster scored on a 19-yard run in the second quarter. The touchdown was the 24th of his career, which moved him into first place on the franchise all-time record list. He entered the game tied with Domanick Williams with 23 career rushing TDs apiece.

* Foster also surpassed 2,500 career rushing yards on his 11th carry of the day. He entered the game with 2,405 career yards.

* Foster caught his 100th career pass when he hauled in his fourth of the day, a 7-yard gain.

* CB Kareem Jackson registered a career-high two passes defensed in the game to go along with five solo tackles, including one for loss.

* WR Jacoby Jones surpassed 1,500 career receiving yards with his first catch of the game, a 16-yard gain. He entered the game with 1,491 career yards. Jones finished the game with 1,519 career receiving yards and 1,600 punt return yards, becoming the first Texans player with 1,500 yards receiving and in punt returns.

* Jones returned a punt in the second quarter 50 yards. It was his second return of the season of 50 or more yards and his third of 40 or longer.

* CB Sherrick McManis saw action at kick returner for the second time in his career and first time this season, finishing with a career-high 67 yards on three returns. He had one return for 25 yards last season on 12/13/10 vs. Baltimore.

* K Neil Rackers made his 250th career field goal when he hit from 50 yards out in the fourth quarter.

* Rookie OLB Brooks Reed notched a sack in his third consecutive game when he tackled Cleveland QB Colt McCoy for a 4-yard loss in the second quarter.

* Reed registered his second sack of the game when he tackled McCoy for a 5-yard loss in the third quarter. It marked Reed’s first career multi-sack game.

* ILB DeMeco Ryans forced a fumble on Cleveland’s opening play. It was his first forced fumble of the season and the sixth of his career.

* Ryans started the 79th game of his career, which moved him into a tie with Dunta Robinson for the fifth-most in team history.

* QB Matt Schaub scored a rushing touchdown for the second consecutive game when he ran in from the 2-yard line. The touchdown gave Schaub four career rushing touchdowns.

* Schaub saw his streak of 104 consecutive pass attempts without an interception broken when a deep pass intended for TE Owen Daniels was tipped and intercepted by Cleveland LB D’Qwell Jackson. Schaub’s streak was the second-longest in team history behind his own streak of 110 in a row from 11/4/10-12/2/10.

* Tate scored his second career touchdown on a 27-yard run on Houston’s opening drive. The 27-yard run was the longest of his career.

* Tate registered his 100th career carry on the first play of the second quarter, a gain of 24. It was Tate’s third rushing attempt of the day.
