Texans love their new letterman jackets

Posted by Nick Scurfield on December 8, 2012 – 12:14 pm

Every Texans player got a custom-made, personalized team letterman jacket on Friday, an idea spawned by nose tackle Shaun Cody and carried out by Cody, outside linebacker Connor Barwin and Texans director of equipment services Jay Brunetti.

We put up the story behind the jackets and a video about them on Friday. Here’s what Barwin and some of his teammates said about them:

Barwin: “Cody was the inspiration. It was Shaun Cody’s idea, and I obviously right away thought it was a great idea and then me and him kind of got together and figured out a way to make it happen with J-Bird, our equipment guy. He got in touch with a local varsity letterman jacket company. We needed them by this game in New England because this is maybe our only cold game, so it’s perfect for this week to wear on the road.

“They turned out perfect. There was a lot of discussion what kind of color combo we would make, and we went with the navy on navy and it turned out perfect. I think it shows the kind of team we are. Nobody’s got their name on it. it definitely shows what kind of team we are. I think it could be a future tradition with this Houston Texans organization.”

DE Antonio Smith: “The jackets is awesome. They are so clean, when you put ‘em on, it makes you look debonair. Smooth, kind of like. I think it’s one of Connor’s best ideas. Almost ninja-like.”

“Shaun, I think, had the idea first, and then Connor kind of like – they both… they’re like a team. They’re almost one. They do everything together. Pretty unique couple guys, man.”

DE J.J. Watt: “I think this is really cool. I think it shows a lot about our team and the chemistry that we have, and the guys in this locker room really care about each other and I think these jackets are a great way to signify that. We’re really proud to have ‘em, and we’re excited to wear ‘em.”

RB Arian Foster: “I like it man, I do. I never had a letterman’s jacket. I didn’t get one in high school. I think I had one in college but it just never fit, so I never wore it, so this will be my first official letterman’s jacket.”

“I think it was Shaun Cody and Connor Barwin, between one of those two interesting fellas. They had the idea to have letterman’s jackets, and I thought it was funny. I think it just shows team camaraderie. (It’s a) funny little thing.”

QB Matt Schaub: “I think they’re awesome. I think it’s a really good idea that Connor and Shaun came up with as far as camaraderie amongst the guys and feeling a brotherhood. I think it’s really cool that they came up with that idea, and then we followed through and did it. All the guys were on board with it. It’s a pretty neat deal.

“I think they look great. Hopefully, this weather cools off to where it feels a little more comfortable to wear it here in Houston, but I think they look great.”

TE Owen Daniels: “The whole letter jacket thing is pretty sweet. It’s kind of like a team unity thing. We’ll be wearing ‘em together. Kind of brings us back to the good ol’ high school days and brings back memories of playing back then, so we’re gonna have fun with it, man. They did a great job with the jackets. They look unbelievable, so we’re gonna have fun wearing ‘em.”

RB Justin Forsett: “I love the jackets. I love it. I can’t wait to get am outfit together and bring it here, wear it and let everybody see my style like it was high school when you show off your letterman jacket in high school when you sit, post up on the corner somewhere, at the cafeteria. It brings back some memories, so I love letterman jackets. Nice swag.”

The 6.0 sacks were tied for the second-most in team history and were the most since Houston tied a franchise record with 7.0 at Jacksonville on 11/27/11.

·         Extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 79 with a 14-yard catch on the first play of the game.

·         Caught his 50th pass of the season on a gain of 19 yards in the third quarter. It marked the fourth time in his career that Daniels has caught at least 50 passes.

K SHAYNE GRAHAM

·         Scored his 100th point of the season when he hit his third extra point of the game. It marked his sixth career 100-point season and his first since 2007.

·         Connected on a 50-yard field goal in the third quarter. It was his 11th career field goal of 50 yards or longer and his second as a Texan.

P DONNIE JONES

·         Punted 10 times, which tied for the second-most in a game in team history. His 10 punts were the most by a Texans punter since Brett Hartmann had 10 at Jacksonville on 11/27/11. The team record is 11 punts by Chad Stanley on 12/1/02 at Indianapolis.

·         Registered his fourth sack of the season and his fourth in five games when he dropped Tennessee QB Jake Locker for a 1-yard loss in the second quarter.

·         Recovered a fumble in the third quarter, the first of his career.

·         Registered his second sack of the game and fifth of the season when he dropped Locker for a loss of 5 yards in the third quarter.

FS GLOVER QUIN

·         Intercepted his second pass of the season and the fifth of his career when he picked off Tennessee QB Jake Locker on the final play of the second quarter.

ILB BARRETT RUUD

·         Registered his first sack as a Texan and the sixth of his career when he dropped Tennessee QB Jake Locker for a loss of 8 yards in the third quarter. It was Ruud’s first sack since 12/26/10 vs. Seattle as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

QB MATT SCHAUB

·         Notched his 20th sack as a Texan and his fifth of the season when he dropped Tennessee QB Jake Locker for a 9-yard loss in the third quarter.

·         Forced a fumble in the third quarter that was recovered by OLB Whitney Mercilus. It was Smith’s second forced fumble of the season and the ninth of his career.

WR KEVIN WALTER

·         Started his 87th game, which ties him with TE Owen Daniels and moves them each past former Texans RT Eric Winston for third on the team’s all-time games started list.

DE J.J. WATT

·         Joined Hall of Fame DE Reggie White as the only players in NFL history to record 15 or more sacks and 13 passes defensed in a season when he sacked Tennessee QB Jake Locker for a 6-yard loss in the second quarter. The sack gave him 15.5 on the year to go along with 15 passes defensed. White had 15.0 sacks and 13 passes defensed in 1991.

·         Set a League record for the most passes defensed in a season by a defensive lineman. Watt now has 15 passes defensed on the year, bettering the previous mark of 13 by Hall of Fame DE Reggie White in 1991.

·         Tipped a pass on the final play of the second quarter, leading to an interception by FS Glover Quin. It was the eighth takeaway that Watt has been involved in this season. He also has two fumble recoveries and the forced fumble he caused earlier in the game.

·         Forced the first fumble of his career when he knocked the ball out of the arms of Tennessee RB Chris Johnson in the second quarter.
