THE WIN…

· Was the first in postseason play in franchise history.

· Made Houston the sixth expansion franchise since 1976 to win its playoff debut, joining Carolina (1996), Jacksonville (1996), Baltimore (2000), Seattle (1983) and Tampa Bay (1979). The Cleveland Browns, who returned to play in 1999, lost in their first playoff appearance in 2002.

· Was the first for a Houston pro football franchise since December 29, 1991 when the Houston Oilers defeated the New York Jets 17-10 in an AFC Wild Card Playoff Game.

THE TEXANS…

· Outrushed the Bengals 188-65. Houston outrushed its opponents 11 times during the regular season and was 8-3 in those games.

· Posted a plus-three turnover margin, intercepting three passes while not giving the ball away. The Texans were 6-2 in the regular season when they had a positive turnover margin.

· Scored 14 points off of three takeaways. During regular-season play, the Texans scored 119 points off of 27 takeaways.

· Led at halftime and after the third quarter. Houston led at intermission and after three quarters 11 times each in the regular season and went 8-3 in those games in both instances.

· Were tied at the end of the first quarter. Houston was only tied after the first quarter once in the regular season and won that game.

· Set a franchise attendance record with a crowd of 71,725, topping the previous mark of 71,585 earlier this year vs. Pittsburgh (10/2).

· Team captains were WR Andre Johnson and C Chris Myers on offense; ILB Brian Cushing, ILB DeMeco Ryans and DE Antonio Smith on defense; and K Neil Rackers representing the special teams.

· The Bengals won the toss and deferred the option to the second half. The Texans elected to receive the opening kickoff.

TEXANS PLAYOFF FIRSTS…

· First play from scrimmage: RB Arian Foster carried up the middle for 5 yards.

· First run: 5-yard run by Arian Foster.

· First pass: incomplete pass from QB T.J. Yates to WR Andre Johnson.

· First penalty: false start by RB Arian Foster.

· First tackle: ILB Brian Cushing stopped Cincinnati RB Cedric Benson for a 2-yard gain.

Among players, 14 of 53 (26.4 percent) on the active roster have played in a postseason game. In other words, 39 of 53 (73.6 percent) have not. The Texans have a total of 53 games of playoff experience on the roster, including four Super Bowl appearances.

Will that be a factor against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday? Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, who has been to six Super Bowls as a player and coach, was asked Tuesday about overcoming his team’s lack of playoff experience.

“I don’t know that answer,” he said. “I mean, I’ve been asked so many times. It is what it is. From that standpoint, as far as our players, maybe that’s a good thing that they don’t have a lot of things to pull from. It’s just, ‘Go play it like any other game.’ They know that the result – the biggest factor – you can move on. If you don’t play well, you’re not moving on, you’re going home. They all understand that, but this is the Houston Texans’ first taste of a playoff game.”

Kubiak said that playoff-tested veterans Antonio Smith and Danieal Manning have stepped up as leaders this week, passing along “a lot of great information” to their teammates – not to mention taking things up a notch on the practice field.

“Watching Danieal Manning practice today and watching him prepare – if you’re his teammate, you know there was something different about it today,” Kubiak said Tuesday. “You just ask those guys to lead the way, and we got a lot of good players that need to jump in there and go with them, so we’ll find out.”

Among coaches, 14 of 16 (87.5 percent) have playoff experience. Defensive backs coach Vance Joseph and offensive assistant Marc Lubick are the lone exceptions. The Texans’ coaching staff has coached and/or played in 175 postseason games. Kubiak has coached in 16 and played in four. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has coached in 26.

The Texans have eight coaches who have participated in Super Bowls, with 10 rings and 20 appearances among them. Kubiak won three Super Bowls as a coach — one as quarterbacks coach in San Francisco in 1994 and two as offensive coordinator in Denver in 1997-98.

“I hope they (players) look at our staff and pull from everybody,” Kubiak said. “Wade’s been in a lot of big football games, (offensive coordinator) Rico (Rick Dennison), guys have been in a lot of playoff games, have been around those type of things. They got to look to everybody, and like I said, there’s a lot of information to be passed along this week, whether it’s from me, coaches, players who’ve played in playoff games, but the bottom line is we’re going to play with the same ball, we’re going play on the same fields. That was my message to them (Tuesday) morning: ‘Hey, whatever you did during the season, you did a hell of a job. You make sure you’re doing the same thing this week as we prepare for Saturday.’”

Courtesy of the Texans’ PR staff, game notes from Houston’s 35-31 Week 6 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs:

• Paid Attendance was 70,926.

• The win evened head coach Gary Kubiak’s record at 35-35.

• The win kept the Texans in at least a tie for first place in the AFC South going into the bye week.

• The improved the Texans record to 4-2, which is the best record through six games in franchise history.

• The win gave Houston a 3-2 lead in the all-time series with Kansas City and gave the Texans a two-game winning streak against the Chiefs.

• The win was Houston’s fifth consecutive victory over an AFC opponent dating back to last season. Houston’s last loss to an AFC opponent came at Jacksonville on 12/6/09.

• The win evened Kubiak’s record against AFC teams at 25-25.

• The win improved Kubiak’s record against AFC West opponents to 7-2.

• The win was the 53rd in Texans history.

• The win evened Houston’s record at Reliant Stadium to 2-2 this season.

• Houston gained more than 400 yards for the third time this season, totaling 421 yards in the game. Houston also topped 400 yards in Week 2 at Washington (9/19) and in Week 4 at Oakland (10/3).

• The Texans outgained the Chiefs, 421-417. It was the third time this season that Houston outgained its opponent. The Texans also outgained Washington (526-421, 9/19) and Oakland (441-363, 10/3).

• The Texans were a perfect 4-of-4 in the red zone. It was the second consecutive game in which the Texans scored a touchdown on every trip inside the red zone. Houston was 1-of-1 inside the 20 vs. the New York Giants (10/10).

• Houston became the first team this season to score more than 20 points against Kansas City’s defense.

• Houston topped 30 points for the fourth time this season. That matches the most 30-point games in a season in franchise history. Houston also had four 30-point games in 2009 and 2007.

• Houston scored touchdowns on each of its last four possessions. That is the longest streak of consecutive scoring drives this season. Houston scored on three straight possessions vs. Indianapolis (9/12), at Washington (9/19) and at Oakland (10/3).

• Houston overcame a deficit of 10 or more points in the fourth quarter to win the game for just the third time in franchise history – and second this season. Houston came back from 10 down in Week 2 at Washington (9/19) and overcame a 14-point fourth quarter deficit in the 2009 season finale vs. New England (1/3/10).

• Houston’s 21 points in the fourth quarter were tied for the third-most in the last period in team history. Houston scored 29 vs. Tennessee on 10/21/07 and scored 22 in the last stanza at Buffalo on 11/1/09. The last time Houston scored 21 in the fourth quarter was vs. New England on 1/3/10.

• The Texans won the toss and deferred the option until the second half. Kansas City elected to receive the ball. Houston improved to 1-1 this season when winning the coin toss.

• The roof of Reliant Stadium was open for today’s game. It marks the first time this season that the roof has been open. The Texans improved to 12-5 under Kubiak and 20-17 all-time with the roof open.

• The Texans sold out their 86th consecutive home game. Houston has sold out every home game, including preseason and regular season contests, in franchise history.

• DE Mark Anderson made his Texans debut. He saw action but did not record any statistics. Anderson was signed on 10/7 and was inactive vs. the New York Giants (10/10).

• Daniels caught a season-high five passes and posted a season high in yardage with 79.

• RB Arian Foster scored from two yards out in the fourth quarter. It was his fifth rushing touchdown of the season.

• Foster scored his second touchdown of the game when he dove into the end zone from two yards out in the fourth quarter. It was Foster’s third career game with multiple rushing touchdowns and his fourth multi-touchdown game overall.

• Foster caught a career-high six passes. He previously caught four passes in a game twice, with the last coming in Week 3 vs. Dallas (9/26).

• Johnson caught his second touchdown pass of the season when he hauled in an 11-yard scoring pass with 28 seconds remaining in the game. It was his 44th career touchdown catch.

• Johnson extended his streak of consecutive games played with a reception to 71 with a four-yard catch in the first quarter. Johnson has caught a pass in 106 of his 107 career games.

• Johnson’s 44-yard reception in the second quarter was his second-longest of the season. He had a 48-yard catch in Week 4 vs. the New York Giants (10/10).

• FB Vonta Leach recorded his first kickoff return of the season when he fielded a short kick in the third quarter and returned it nine yards. It was his 11th career kickoff return.

• Leach’s 26-yard kick return in the third quarter was the longest of his career. His previous long was 20 yards on 12/19/05 at Baltimore as a member of the Green Bay Packers.

• Leach recorded multiple kickoff returns in a game for the third time in his career. He had a career-high three returns on 12/19/05 at Baltimore and had two returns on 11/29/09 vs. Tennessee.

• CB Brice McCain made his second career start when the Texans opened the game with five defensive backs. McCain also started in the season opener vs. Indianapolis (9/12).

• LB David Nixon came on in place of injured MLB DeMeco Ryans and registered six tackles, which were the first of his career. He previously had seen action primarily on special teams.

• DT Amobi Okoye registered his first sack of the season when he tackled Kansas City QB Matt Cassel for a 12-yard loss on the game’s final play to clinch the victory.

• Okoye finished the game with a career-high six tackles, including two solos. His previous single-game high was five tackles, which he did four times, most recently in the season opener vs. Indianapolis (9/12).

• Schaub posted his second 300-yard game of the season and the 15th of his career. He threw for 497 yards in Week 2 at Washington (9/19).

• Schaub threw his eighth touchdown pass of the season when he hit TE Joel Dreessen from five yards out in the second quarter. It was Schaub’s 61st touchdown pass as a Texan.

• Strength & conditioning coach Cedric Smith, who held the same position in Kansas City from 2007-09, was named a team captain for the game. Today’s game captains were WR Andre Johnson, QB Matt Schaub, DE Antonio Smith and DE Mario Williams.

• G Kasey Studdard made his 2010 season debut, seeing action on special teams. Studdard was inactive for the season’s first five games.

• P Matt Turk boomed a 60-yard punt in the first quarter. It was his longest of the season, bettering his 58-yard effort in the season opener vs. Indianapolis (9/12).

• RB Derrick Ward scored a touchdown in his third consecutive game when he reached the end zone from 38 yards out. It marked the first time in his career that Ward has scored in three consecutive games.
