Texans make three roster moves

Posted by Nick Scurfield on December 7, 2010 – 3:48 pm

The Texans have placed defensive end Jesse Nading on injured reserve, signed safety Quentin Demps and re-signed defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard to their practice squad.

Demps (5-11, 206) was a fourth-round pick out of UTEP by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008. He had 12 tackles, one sack and one interception in two seasons with the Eagles and returned kickoffs as a rookie, averaging 25.3 yards per return with one touchdown.

A San Antonio native, Demps played for the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League in 2010. He returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown in the Colonials’ season finale on Nov. 20.

Nading had not played since injuring his left knee against the New York Giants in Week 5. He finished his second season out of Colorado State with nine tackles and 0.5 sacks in five games.

Sheppard was on the Texans’ practice squad earlier this season before being promoted to the active roster on Oct. 25. An undrafted rookie from Arkansas, he appeared in one game and was waived on Nov. 30.

Texans active Hill, waive Sheppard

Posted by Nick Scurfield on November 30, 2010 – 4:36 pm

The Texans have activated tight end Anthony Hill from the Physically Unable to Perform list and waived defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard.

Hill (6-6, 278) was a fourth-round draft pick last year out of North Carolina State. He suffered a torn ACL last season against the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 13.

Sheppard (6-2, 289) is an undrafted rookie from Arkansas. The Texans called him up from their practice squad in Week 8 to play against the Indianapolis Colts. He had not been active since that game with rookie Earl Mitchell back in good health and veteran Damione Lewis also emerging at the defensive tackle position.

Sheppard not alone with practice squad roots

Posted by Nick Scurfield on October 30, 2010 – 11:17 am

Defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard was promoted to the active roster on Monday after spending the first seven weeks of his rookie season on the Texans’ practice squad.

An undrafted free agent from Arkansas, Sheppard is the ninth player on the Texans’ 53-man roster to have been promoted from the practice squad at some point in his career.

Here’s a look at the rest, which includes six players who have started for the Texans this season (starters denoted by *):

WR David Anderson – Seventh-round draft pick in 2006 (Texans). Spent first six weeks of rookie season on Texans’ practice squad.

G Mike Brisiel* – Undrafted free agent in 2006 (Texans). Spent entire rookie season and 13 weeks of 2007 season on Texans’ practice squad.

RB Arian Foster* – Undrafted free agent in 2009 (Texans). Spent first 11 weeks of rookie season on Texans’ practice squad.

FB Vonta Leach* – Undrafted free agent in 2004 (Green Bay Packers). Spent first 11 weeks of rookie season on Packers’ practice squad.

C Chris Myers* – Sixth-round draft pick in 2005 (Denver Broncos). Spent first four weeks of rookie season on Broncos’ practice squad.

DE Jesse Nading – Undrafted free agent in 2008 (Texans). Spent first 11 weeks of rookie season and 15 weeks of 2009 season on Texans’ practice squad.

DE Antonio Smith* – Fifth-round pick in 2004 (Arizona Cardinals). Spent first 13 weeks of rookie season and four weeks of 2005 season on Cardinals’ practice squad. Also played for the Hamburg Sea Devils in NFL Europe in 2005.

WR Kevin Walter* – Seventh-round pick in 2003 (New York Giants). Spent first five weeks of rookie season on Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad.

The Texans also have two practice squad veterans on their injured reserve list:

DE Tim Bulman – Undrafted free agent in 2005 (Arizona Cardinals). Spent first nine weeks of rookie season on Cardinals’ practice squad. Spent 11 weeks of 2006 season and 15 weeks of 2007 season on Texans’ practice squad.

LB Darnell Bing – Fourth-round pick in 2006 (Detroit Lions). Spent time on practice squads of San Francisco 49ers (2007), Detroit Lions (2008) and Texans (2009).

Feeling like a No. 1 pick

Posted by Nick Scurfield on October 28, 2010 – 9:26 am

Here’s a nice read on Texans defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard from the Albany Herald, his hometown newspaper in Southwest Georgia. Sheppard was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster earlier this week.

Humble, driven Sheppard works his way up

Posted by Nick Scurfield on October 26, 2010 – 10:54 am

Six months after going undrafted and seven weeks after being cut and placed on the Texans’ practice squad, rookie defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard was signed to the active roster on Monday. Sheppard, who’s as relentlessly humble as he is a hard worker, got a call from Texans coaches during the bye week informing him of the promotion.

“It was good news, but it’s just an opportunity for me to work even harder,” he said. “I want to prove myself to my teammates, to the veterans on this team, and to the coaches.”

A native of Bainbridge, Ga., Sheppard was a two-time All-SEC performer at Arkansas before he went the undrafted/practice squad route with the Texans.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot through my experiences here. I was just put in a position to work even harder, and I think that I took advantage of it and I’m glad to be here.”

Texans defensive end Antonio Smith had a similar start to his career. A fifth-round draft pick in 2004, he spent parts of his first two seasons on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad. Smith said that Sheppard’s energy, disruptive nature, quickness and versatility remind him of a younger version of himself. Sheppard even has Smith’s old rookie number, 67.

“I’m proud of him,” Smith said. “I think that each and every week, he keeps putting his best foot forward in practice. He keeps showing up every day. It’s nothing different. He don’t change. I think that once he gets out there on the field, at first he might have a little jitters, but he’s going to show everybody just how bright he is. I think that he’s going to be a great young kid in this game.”

Monday locker room notes

Posted by drewdougherty on October 25, 2010 – 4:02 pm

The big news after today’s practice was obviously Brian Cushing’s switch from strongside linebacker to middle linebacker. Cushing said when he was at USC he filled in for Rey Maualuga a couple times at middle linebacker, but actually practiced at that position more than he actually played there.

  • Cushing also said he’d discussed with position coach Johnny Holland a willingness to slide over to help fill the void left by the injured DeMeco Ryans.
  • Plus, Cushing has been in contact with Ryans about the move, and said he’s learned a great deal from the team captain about playing the middle spot.
  • Kevin Bentley will start at the strongside spot now that Cushing is in the middle, and Bentley said he’s lost a lot of weight and is “feeling like my old self”.
  • When asked about whether or not he gets ready differently for a Monday Night Football game, Bentley smiled and said that he’s too busy getting angry about who he’ll soon face.
  • Bentley and Cushing both said that even though the Colts will be without Pro Bowl tight end Dallas Clark, they’re certain Indianapolis will have somebody very capably filling in without Clark.
  • Malcolm Sheppard was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster, and head coach Gary Kubiak said Sheppard’s been one of the most impressive Texans through the first six weeks of the season. Sheppard credited the promotion to hard work and persistence, and said he was thankful for the opportunity.
  • You can count defensive lineman Antonio Smith as somebody who thinks the Colts will look for payback. He thinks there will be a bit of a revenge factor on the minds of Indianapolis next Monday.
