Draft pick history since 2002: No. 76

Posted by Nick Scurfield on April 25, 2012 – 10:07 am

From 233rd overall in the seventh round to 26th overall in the first round, the Texans have eight picks in the 2011 NFL Draft. We’re taking a look at the players who have been drafted at each of those eight spots since the Texans’ inaugural season in 2002.

The Texans’ third pick in the 2012 draft is at No. 76 overall in the third round. They’ve never had the pick before in team history.

76th overall picks since 2002
2011: Will Rackley, G, Lehigh (Jacksonville Jaguars)*
2010: Chad Jones, S, LSU (New York Giants)*
2009: DeAndre Levy, LB, Wisconsin (Detroit Lions)*
2008: Brad Cottam, TE, Tennessee (Kansas City Chiefs)
2007: Jason Hill, WR, Washington State (San Francisco 49ers)
2006: Anthony Schelgel, LB, Ohio State (New York Jets)
2005: Karl Paymah, DB, Washington State (Denver Broncos)
2004: Derrick Strait, CB, Oklahoma (New York Jets)
2003: Mike Seidman, TE, UCLA (Carolina Panthers)
2002: Melvin Fowler, C, Maryland (Cleveland Browns)

All of the players picked at this slot since 2002 have started at least four games except Jones (2010), who has yet to play in an NFL game because of injuries suffered in a car accident shortly after he was drafted. None of the players picked 76th overall from 2002-08 were on an NFL roster at the end of last season.

No Pro Bowlers have been drafted at 76 in the last 10 years. Among the most accomplished players of the group are Fowler, who started 60 games and played in 89, and Levy, who has started 37 games in three seasons in Detroit.

Paymah signed with the Texans in September 2010 and played in two games that season as a reserve.

Texans draft history: Fifth-round picks

Posted by Nick Scurfield on April 22, 2012 – 3:30 pm

We’re taking a round-by-round look at the players who have been drafted by the Texans since their inaugural season in 2002. In particular focus are the picks made since 2007, Rick Smith’s first draft as Texans general manager.

Bold denotes made Texans’ active roster that season
*Denotes finished 2011 season on an NFL roster
#Denotes Pro Bowlers

Texans fifth-round draft picks

2011: T.J. Yates, QB, North Carolina (152 overall)*
2011: Shiloh Keo, S, Idaho (144)*
2010: Sherrick McManis, CB, Northwestern (144)*
2009: James Casey, TE, Rice (152)
*
2008: Frank Okam, DT, Texas (151)*
2007: Brandon Frye, T, Virginia Tech (163)
2007: Brandon Harrison, S, Stanford (144)
———————————————————————————
2005: Drew Hodgdon, C, Arizona State (151)
2002: Ramon Walker, FS, Pittsburgh (153)
2002: Jarrod Baxter, New Mexico (136)

All seven fifth-round picks under Rick Smith have made the active roster (Harrison played in 15 games in 2008 after spending 2007 on injured reserve). Casey (11), Harrison (6) and Yates (5) have all started games for Houston. Every fifth-round pick in team history has made the active roster, although the Texans only had fifth-rounders in two of their first five drafts because of trades.

Casey, Yates, McManis and Keo are still on the Texans’ roster. Casey could be the starting fullback or second tight end in 2012. Yates was elevated to the No. 2 quarterback spot after helping the Texans reach the Divisional Round of the playoffs last season. McManis played in nine games and Keo played in 10 as reserves/special teamers in 2011. Okam has started six games over the last two seasons for Tampa Bay.

Posted by Nick Scurfield on April 20, 2012 – 9:23 am

The Texans’ seventh pick in the 2012 draft is at No. 195 overall in the sixth round. They’ve never had the pick before in team history.

Draft pick history since 2002: No. 233

Posted by Nick Scurfield on April 19, 2012 – 10:10 am

From 233rd overall in the seventh round to 26th overall in the first round, the Texans have eight picks in the 2011 NFL Draft. We’re taking a look at the players who have been drafted at each of those eight spots since the Texans’ inaugural season in 2002.

The Texans’ eighth and final pick in the 2012 draft is at No. 233 overall in the seventh round. They’ve have had the pick once before in team history.

*Denotes players who finished the 2011 season on an NFL roster
#Denotes Pro Bowlers

233rd overall picks since 2002
2011: Lawrence Guy, DT, Arizona State (Green Bay Packers)*
2010: Jim Dray, TE, Stanford (Arizona Cardinals)*
2009: Sammy Stroughter, WR, Oregon State (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)*
2008: Justin Forsett, RB, California (Seattle Seahawks)*
2007: Chandler Williams, WR, Florida International (Minnesota Vikings)
2006: Devin Aromashodu, WR, Auburn (Miami Dolphins)*
2005: Jonathan Fanene, DE, Utah (Cincinnati Bengals)*
2004: Christian Morton, CB, Illinois (New England Patriots)
2003: Chance Pearce, LS, Texas A&M (Houston Texans)
2002: Tim Wansley, CB, Georgia (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Six of the last seven players picked 233rd finished last season on an NFL roster. Somewhat surprisingly, seven of the 10 players picked at this slot since 2002 have played in at least one NFL game.

Pearce was cut by the Texans before the start of his rookie season in 2003. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers in January 2004 but never appeared in a game.

Draft history since 2002: Pick No. 11

Posted by Nick Scurfield on April 28, 2011 – 2:29 pm

From the last pick of the seventh round to the 11th pick of the first round, the Texans have eight picks in the 2011 NFL Draft. We’re taking a look at the players who have been drafted at each of those eight spots since the Texans’ inaugural season in 2002.

Pick 8: Mr. Irrelevant | Pick 7: No. 214 | Pick 6: No. 178 | Pick 5: No. 138 | Pick 4: No. 105 | Pick 3: No 73 | Pick 2: No. 42

The Texans’ first pick in the 2011 draft is at No. 11 overall in the first round. This will be the first time they’ve ever had the pick.

Players in the list below who are still on an NFL roster are denoted by an asterisk. Pro Bowlers are denoted by the # sign.

11th overall picks since 2002
2010: Anthony Davis*, OT, Rutgers (San Francisco 49ers)
2009: Aaron Maybin*, DE/OLB, Penn State (Buffalo Bills)
2008: Leodis McKelvin*, CB, Troy (Buffalo Bills)
2007: Patrick Willis*#, LB, Mississippi (San Francisco 49ers)
2006: Jay Cutler*#, QB, Vanderbilt (Denver Broncos)
2005: DeMarcus Ware*#, LB, Troy (Dallas Cowboys)
2004: Ben Roethlisberger*#, QB, Miami (Ohio) (Pittsburgh Steelers )
2003: Marcus Trufant*#, CB, Washington State (Seattle Seahawks)
2002: Dwight Freeney*#, DE, Syracuse (Indianapolis Colts)

That’s quite a run from 2002-07, with six consecutive players who went on to become Pro Bowlers. Willis (2007) has the most tackles in the league since 2007, Ware (2005) has the most sacks since 2005, Freeney (2002) has the most sacks since 2002 and Roethlisberger (2004) has the most Super Bowl rings of any quarterback since 2004.

Cutler (2006) is fourth in the league in passing yards since he became a full-time starter in 2007. Trufant (2003), who has started 119 games in eight seasons, made the Pro Bowl in 2007 after picking off seven passes with the Seahawks.

Maybin (2009) has been an all-out bust in Buffalo, with zero sacks and 22 tackles in two seasons. Davis (2010) started all 16 games at right tackle as a rookie, and McKelvin (2008) started 14 games with two interceptions for the Bills last season.

Even if the Texans don’t trade up in the first round, history shows that they should be able to get a major impact player at No. 11. If someone like, say, Missouri’s Aldon Smith could become the next DeMarcus Ware, Wade Phillips would be a very happy man.

Draft history since 2002: Pick No. 42

Posted by Nick Scurfield on April 27, 2011 – 3:18 pm

From the last pick of the seventh round to the 11th pick of the first round, the Texans have eight picks in the 2011 NFL Draft. We’re taking a look at the players who have been drafted at each of those eight spots since the Texans’ inaugural season in 2002.

Pick 8: Mr. Irrelevant | Pick 7: No. 214 | Pick 6: No. 178 | Pick 5: No. 138 | Pick 4: No. 105 | Pick 3: No 73

The Texans’ second pick in the 2011 draft is at No. 42 overall in the second round. This will be the first time they’ve ever had the pick.

Players in the list below who are still on an NFL roster are denoted by an asterisk. Pro Bowlers are denoted by the # sign.

42nd overall picks since 2002
2010: Rob Gronkowski*, TE, Arizona (New England Patriots)
2009: Jairus Byrd*#, S, Oregon (Buffalo Bills)
2008: Eddie Royal*, WR, Virginia Tech (Denver Broncos)
2007: Tony Ugoh*, OT, Arkansas (Indianapolis Colts)
2006: Danieal Manning*, S, Abilene Christian (Chicago Bears)
2005: Kevin Burnett*, LB, Tennessee (Dallas Cowboys)
2004: Travis LaBoy*, DE, Hawaii (Tennessee Titans)
2003: Ken Hamlin*#, S, Arkansas (Seattle Seahawks)
2002: Larry Tripplett, DT, Washington (Indianapolis Colts)

If the Texans can get a player with this pick on Friday like the ones listed above, they’ll be in good shape. Every player drafted 42nd since 2002 has started at least 25 games in the NFL except for Gronkowski (2010), who couldn’t have because he was a rookie last season. Byrd (2009) made the Pro Bowl after picking off nine passes as a rookie, while Hamlin (2003) made the Pro Bowl after picking off five passes with the Cowboys in 2007.

Gronkowski had 42 catches, 546 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Patriots in 2010. Royal (2008) had 91 catches for 980 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie, has averaged more than 60 catches and 600 yards per season and has excelled as the Broncos’ punt and kick returner. Manning (2006) has started 56 games in five seasons and has been the Bears’ primary kickoff returner since 2008.

Ugoh (2007) was the Colts’ starting left tackle in 2007-08 before he was waived in 2010 and signed by Detroit. Burnett (2005) started all 16 games for the Chargers last season, recording 95 tackles, 6.0 sacks and two interceptions. LaBoy (2004) has 28.5 sacks in six seasons.

Tripplett (2002) is the only player on this list not who’s no longer on an active roster, but even he had a productive career with 62 starts, 195 tackles and 8.5 sacks in six seasons.

Draft history since 2002: Pick No. 73

Posted by Nick Scurfield on April 26, 2011 – 9:57 am

From the last pick of the seventh round to the 11th pick of the first round, the Texans have eight picks in the 2011 NFL Draft. We’re taking a look at the players who have been drafted at each of those eight spots since the Texans’ inaugural season in 2002.

Pick 8: Mr. Irrelevant | Pick 7: No. 214 | Pick 6: No. 178 | Pick 5: No. 138 | Pick 4: No. 105

The Texans’ third pick in the 2011 draft is at No. 73 overall in the third round. This will be the third time they’ve ever had the pick.

Players in the list below who are still on an NFL roster are denoted by an asterisk. Pro Bowlers are denoted by the # sign.

73rd overall picks since 2002
2010: John Jerry*, OT, Ole Miss (Miami Dolphins)
2009: Derek Cox*, CB, William & Mary (Jacksonville Jaguars)
2008: Jamaal Charles*#, RB, Texas (Kansas City Chiefs)
2007: Jacoby Jones*, WR, Lane College (Houston Texans)
2006: Dusty Dvoracek, DT, Oklahoma (Chicago Bears)
2005: Vernand Morency, RB, Oklahoma State (Houston Texans)
2004: Keith Smith, CB, McNeese State (Detroit Lions)
2003: Wayne Hunter*, T, Hawaii (Seattle Seahawks)
2002: Will Witherspoon*, LB, Georgia (Carolina Panthers)

Only three of the players drafted here since 2002 are no longer in the league, and this spot has produced a rising superstar in Charles (2008). He has at least 1,120 rushing yards in both of the last two seasons and led the league in 2010 with 6.4 yards per carry, the second-highest average in NFL history.

Jerry (2010) started 10 games as a rookie last season. Cox (2009) has started 27 games in two seasons and has eight interceptions. Witherspoon (2002) has started 131 games in his career, an average of 14.6 starts per season, and has averaged 90.8 tackles. The leading tackler on the Panthers’ 2003 Super Bowl team, he spent last season with the Titans. Hunter (2003) started four games last season for the Jets.

Of the Texans’ two picks at this spot, Jones (2007) has been much better. He’s had ups and down in his four seasons, but he set career-highs in 2010 with seven starts, 51 catches and 562 yards, and he had six receiving TDs in 2009 on just 27 catches. He also has three career kick returns for touchdowns (two punt, one kickoff), which ties for the most in Texans history. Morency (2005) was the Texans’ third-string running back as a rookie, notching 46 carries for 184 yards (4.0 average) and two touchdowns. He also averaged 21.9 yards on 20 kickoff returns. He was traded to the Packers for Samkon Gado in 2006 and released after the 2007 season.
