One-year deal reported for veteran DT Lewis

Posted by Nick Scurfield on July 27, 2011 – 8:44 am

In addition to reportedly agreeing to new contracts with wide receiver Jacoby Jones and tackle Rashad Butler on Tuesday, the Texans retained veteran defensive tackle Damione Lewis, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com.

No transactions are official until they are announced by the Texans, and there has been no announcement from the team on any free agents at this time. Teams aren’t allowed to sign free agents on Friday, although they were allowed to negotiate with free agents as of Tuesday at 9 a.m. CT.

Florio reports that the Texans will re-sign Lewis to a one-year deal for the league-minimum salary. After joining the Texans last season on Oct. 25, Lewis appeared in 10 games with 17 tackles and a sack. The 10-year veteran from Miami (Fla.), a first-round pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2001, spent five seasons in St. Louis and four with the Carolina Panthers. He started 31 games for the Panthers from 2008-09.

Texans active Hill, waive Sheppard

Posted by Nick Scurfield on November 30, 2010 – 4:36 pm

The Texans have activated tight end Anthony Hill from the Physically Unable to Perform list and waived defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard.

Hill (6-6, 278) was a fourth-round draft pick last year out of North Carolina State. He suffered a torn ACL last season against the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 13.

Sheppard (6-2, 289) is an undrafted rookie from Arkansas. The Texans called him up from their practice squad in Week 8 to play against the Indianapolis Colts. He had not been active since that game with rookie Earl Mitchell back in good health and veteran Damione Lewis also emerging at the defensive tackle position.
