They had a chance to become the first NFL team to wrap up a spot in the postseason this weekend, but a couple of outcomes on Sunday negated that possibility.
After beating the Detroit Lions, the Texans needed the following to happen to clinch a playoff berth:
1) TEN loss or tie + MIA loss or tie + NYJ loss or tie + CIN loss + SD loss or tie
2) TEN loss or tie + MIA loss or tie + NYJ loss or tie + CIN loss or tie + PIT loss
The Jets, Titans and Steelers all lost. The Chargers play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon. But the Miami Dolphins beat the Seattle Seahawks and the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Oakland Raiders.
At 10-1, the Texans are tied with the Atlanta Falcons for the best record in the NFL. They have a three-game lead in the AFC South over the Indianapolis Colts (7-4), who they play twice in the final three weeks of the season.
