Off the Turf with Scurf: Bryan Braman

Posted by Nick Scurfield on October 20, 2012 – 11:11 am

Episode 14 of “Off the Turf with Scurf,” my semi-weekly podcast here on HoustonTexans.com, features Texans outside linebacker and special teams ace Bryan Braman.

Braman, who went undrafted out of West Texas A&M in 2011, has missed two games with a hamstring injury this season but ranks sixth in the NFL with seven special teams tackles. In the podcast, he discusses his long hair; the possibility of getting dreadlocks; how he lost his dreads in college and where he keeps them (in a Ziploc bag) now; his mentality on special teams; his infamous helmetless tackle last season against the Tennessee Titans; his teeth, on which he had major surgery done this offseason; how most of his family is “toothless”; his 7-4 grandfather, Ivan Cecil Braman; his upbringing in Spokane, Wash.; his close relationship with his mother, who lives with him in Houston; his high school track and field exploits; working for $10 an hour making concrete railroad ties; his time at Long Beach City College; modeling for Abercrombie & Fitch in Los Angeles; the “culture shock” of being at WTAMU in Canyon, Texas; being kicked off the team his senior year; how realistic he thought his NFL chances were after college; Texans assistant linebackers coach Bobby King, who coached him at WTAMU; working as a bouncer in College Station, Texas, during last year’s lockout; how much he has benefitted from the Texans’ facilities and resources; how getting his teeth fixed has helped him maintain weight; and his hopes for the rest of the season.
