Dwight Jones misses practice, reportedly quits football

Posted by Nick Scurfield on May 29, 2012 – 4:24 pm

Rookie wide receiver Dwight Jones was not with the Texans on Tuesday as they resumed organized team activities (OTAs) at the Methodist Training Center.

Reports emerged that Jones, an undrafted free agent from North Carolina, had quit the team. According to the Houston Chronicle, Jones told Texans officials he no longer wants to play football.

“Dwight’s struggling a little bit today,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said after practice. “He’s a young man with a lot of information (being thrown) at him, so we’ll talk to him this afternoon and see where we’re at. That’s why he’s not here, but he’s OK.”

Jones (6-4, 230) is one of 11 receivers on the roster and one of three undrafted rookies at the position. He likely would be a long shot to make the team, but he’s a talented player who was singled out by general manager Rick Smith as one of the Texans’ undrafted rookies to watch.

Jones, 23, had 85 catches for 1,196 yards and 12 touchdowns last season at North Carolina. He ran a 4.55 40-yard dash and had a 33-inch vertical jump at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Dwight, don’t know if you will read this or not. But, if you do man i just want you to hang in there and tough it out. Think of your kids and making their lives better. Run every route and learn every play in that playbook for your kids man. Look at the big picture..Don’t throw it away ……

Agreed! I hope DJ changes his mind, and returns to OTA’s I was really looking forward to him taking his shot at being apart of something bigger. He is a talented player and I would hate to see squander his gifts.
