“We’re headed to Washington,” Rackers said, according to Berman. “I visited with Coach (Mike) Shanahan and (special teams coach) Danny Smith out there yesterday and really enjoyed what they had to say. I’ll be competing for a job with Graham Gano, who is an established, good kicker. We’re going to see what happens, but it seems like the best opportunity for me and my family at this point. There’s more upside, more opportunity for advancement in Washington.”
The Texans do not have a kicker with the start of the 2012 NFL Draft less than 48 hours away. They could draft a kicker for the first time in team history.
Rackers, 35, was 59-of-68 (86.8 percent) on field goals in two seasons in Houston. He was 43-of-44 under 40 yards (97.7 percent) but only 16-of-24 (66.7 percent) from 40+. He went 3-of-4 in the 2011 playoffs, coming up just short on a 50-yarder at Baltimore in the Divisional Round.
Rackers also has more special teams tackles than any other kicker in NFL history, a trait that surely will be missed by Texans fans. He had 11 special teams tackles in the last two seasons, including this one against Marc Mariani of the Tennessee Titans.
