Wade Phillips lauds Bradie James’ leadership, Tim Dobbins’ versatility

The Texans signed two veteran inside linebackers on Friday in Bradie James, who spent the last nine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, and Tim Dobbins, who played for the Texans in 2011.

Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillilps, who coached James in Dallas from 2007-10, discussed the two players with HoustonTexans.com:

On James: “He’s a good football player, good family man, good leader. He’s what you’re looking for. There’s a reason the guy has played for, what, nine years or whatever it is. There’s a reason he’s played and started and played in every game. He’s a warrior.”

On James’ familiarity with the system: “Him being familiar with what we’re doing, plus he’s a coach on the field – real smart player. Like I said, he’s a real good leader. I think our players will – he fits in with our group really well. He’s a hard worker. And he’s talented.”

On James’ impressive production under Phillips in Dallas: “Yeah. That position [Mike linebacker], we expect to make a lot of plays. And they talk about last year, but they split time. He and [Keith] Brooking split time. They think Sean Lee beat him out, but he and Brooking were playing one side, and they let both those guys go.”

On what James’ role will be in Houston: “Same thing we had at Dallas. I expect him to come in and certainly nothing’s given to him, and I like the guys we have, but I think he’ll come in and compete. And he can make a lot of plays for you. He can make a lot of adjustments. Like I said, he’s smart and knows the defense. Even though he’s a new guy, I think he’ll take a leadership role pretty quickly. He’s a captain of the team, those kind of things.”

On Dobbins: “Tim led the team in special teams tackles last year, and I think everybody remembers the play on the goal line against Baltimore. He played short-yardage for us when he played. When we didn’t play those guys in the Tennessee game, he got to play in that game and showed he can play on defense also. He’s a real versatile player. He can play both inside positions at inside ‘backer, and I was really glad we got him back.”

On solidifying the depth at inside linebacker: “Yeah. You go into the draft, you never know what you’re gonna get. There was a big hole as far as inside ’backers. We just didn’t have many. And now, we’re where we don’t have to have one. I feel like we’ll be just as good as we were last year now that we’ve got those guys back, so let’s go from there.”
