Right guard Antoine Caldwell is primed to step into a full-time starting role this season with the departure of Mike Brisiel in free agency. A third-round draft pick in 2009, Caldwell has already started 13 games in his career and rotated with Brisiel for parts of the last two seasons.
In a one-on-one interview on Texans TV on Thursday, Caldwell said he’s ready to make the most of his chance.
“It’s an unbelievable opportunity,” Caldwell said. “You work so hard in this league for an opportunity and a chance like this, so I’m looking forward to it; I really am. I’m working hard right now and I understand that at this point right now, it’s just an opportunity to be that guy and you’ve kind of got to go in there and work hard and earn the confidence of your teammates and your coaches, and that will allow you be the starter on Sundays. That’s what I’m looking forward to right now, just going out there, working hard and kind of sewing that spot up.”
Caldwell has been working out at Reliant Stadium on a regular basis this offseason, and he recently started working out at a nearby gym with center Chris Myers. He said in a live chat with fans on Thursday that he’s “healthy and ready to go” after dealing with a bad ankle injury for all of last season.
The right guard job won’t be handed to Caldwell this offseason, but it should be his to lose. On top of being healthy, it sounds like he has the right frame of mind to make sure he doesn’t lose it.
