Bob McNair on Eric Winston: “This is a tough part of the business”

Texans chairman and CEO Bob McNair is currently in-studio with Texans play-by-play announcer Marc Vandermeer on the second episode of “Texans All Access,” a new show that will air every Tuesday on SportsRadio 610 AM.
Vandermeer’s first question for McNair was about Texans right tackle Eric Winston, who announced via Twitter on Monday that he surprisingly had been released on the eve of free agency.
“I was talking to [general manager] Rick Smith last night, and I just commented to him, I said, ‘You know, Rick, this is a tough part of the business,’” McNair said. “He said, ‘Boy, it really is.’ And it is. When you’ve got someone that’s been a teammate that’s been out there and gone through training camp and gone through tough times and worked with you back-to-back in trying to build a team, and then all of a sudden just due to circumstances of really, the salary cap, you have to make that kind of a decision, and it’s very difficult to do.”
Winston was a third-round draft pick of the Texans’ in 2006 out of the University of Miami (Fla.). After moving into the starting lineup midway through his rookie season, he started 87 consecutive games.

This is a move that I can not understand. I have been a Kub & Smith supporter through it all but this is hard to swallow. Maybe we don’t have all of the information but…..you cut Winston to free up $4 million when you have Jones making twice that and contributing less to the team. Was this move to spite the fans who want Jones gone? I have been a Jones fan….as much as anyone….but really? cut Winston? he had a great year in 2011 and was a big part of what was a very good O line in 2012!

Opps I meant 2011! He would have been a big part to a great O line in 2012!

Mr. McNair,
Please do not tare about this team to try and keep some one who only played 5 games in the Texans best season ever!!!! Use Mario’s 15 Mill to get a legit #2 wide receiver!!!!
