Running back Arian Foster and cornerback Johnathan Joseph made the squad as reserves. Nine other Texans players – outside linebacker Connor Barwin, left tackle Duane Brown, inside linebacker Brian Cushing, tight end Owen Daniels, wide receiver Andre Johnson, kick returner Jacoby Jones, center Chris Myers, defensive end Antonio Smith and defensive end J.J. Watt – wound up as alternates.
Cushing didn’t make it despite leading the Texans’ No. 2-ranked defense with 110 tackles. His next-closest teammate has 72 tackles. Cushing also has four sacks and two interceptions. Barwin is tied for third in the AFC with 11.5 sacks, while Watt (5.5 sacks) and Smith (4.5 sacks) have been impact players from the 3-4 DE spot.
Joseph is the only one player who made it from a defense that ranked No. 1 in the league for much of the season.
“To me, that’s kind of strange to see the year that everyone else has been having,” Joseph said Tuesday. “It shocked me a lot, to be honest, just because I thought other guys were going to get voted in. It wasn’t our main goal or focus; we weren’t watching and praying about who was in and who was out, but just the way everyone has played this year with Connor having the year he’s having, Brian Cushing, J.J. Watt, Antonio Smith and the rest of those guys, it’s kind of a disappointment.”
None of the Texans’ offensive linemen made the Pro Bowl, even though Houston ranks second in rushing this season and has allowed only 30 sacks. The Texans had the league’s leading rusher in 2010 and the league’s leading passer in 2009, yet none of their O-linemen has ever been to a Pro Bowl.
“I’m extremely disappointed,” Foster said. “It’s still one of my goals to get one of them in there. Hopefully, I have a long career here in Houston and we’re going to get that done.
“My teammates and my line, I think they got the shaft this year, but that’s just a part of it. It’s a business, but I think one of these days, they’re going to realize that we have a great offensive line in this city and they’re going to get rewarded.”
