Bulls on Parade: A nickname is born

Posted by Nick Scurfield on December 4, 2011 – 7:59 pm

Texans outside linebacker Connor Barwin has coined a nickname for the Texans’ defense: Bulls on Parade.

Fans at Reliant Stadium on Sunday may have noticed the song of that name by Rage Against the Machine blaring when the defense was on the field – and Barwin waving his arms and dancing feverishly every time it did.

“I think it’s official that ‘Bulls on Parade’ is the new name of this defense,” Barwin said after the game. “You could hear it: Every time they played that song, the crowd was like a 12th man. I mean, Matt Ryan couldn’t even get his audibles if you saw him. He was having to walk to every single lineman and tell (them) the play.”

It all started with a tweet from Barwin on Thursday evening. He asked his followers if the Texans’ defense had a name. @Louie_Guerra suggested “Bulls on Parade,” and Barwin loved it.

He then sent out the following tweets:

  • RT if your with me! @HoustonTexans @NickScurfield #BULLSONPARADE

Fans obviously loved the idea; more than 100 people retweeted the second one. The Texans’ in-game entertainment staff caught wind of the idea the next day and decided to take Barwin up on his idea.

Sure enough, the Texans’ defense was introduced to the song before their game against the Falcons on Sunday. And on almost every series, the song blared from the Reliant Stadium loudspeakers as Houston’s defense took the field.

“That place was rocking today,” Texans nose tackle Shaun Cody said. “That Rage Against the Machine was going with ‘Bulls on Parade,’ and guys were pumped up. Connor was pumped up. He was like the DJ out there for the stands, and it was good.”

The Texans’ defense has certainly become nickname-worthy this season. They rank in the top five in the NFL in just about every category that matters. They forced two turnovers on Sunday and knocked down Ryan 10 times, and they have limited six consecutive opponents to 14 points or less.

Barwin leads the defense in sacks with 8.5. He also now leads them in nicknames created.

Ha!…I suggested this as the team song LAST SEASON to Sports 610 Radio (Bulls On Parade)…that was before we totally fell apart and had the WORST Defense in the league…Sports Radio 610 even played it for a couple of weeks until it was quite clear that the only parade going on was being thrown by our opponents when they saw us coming up on their schedule….

One word Aaron, TIMING. props to Louie Guerra for suggesting to the right person at the right time for the right defense during the best season we have seen from our team. Enjoy it everyone the Texans have arrived. Lets hope ANDRE can get back for the PLAYOFFS. I loved the “TJ TJ TJ” chant at Reliant this weekend…Had to buy a new Jacket my chest is too big for the old one after a win like that. I am proud of my TEXANS!! BULLS ON PARADE!! BULLS ON PARADE!!

Thanks for the credit. I almost fell outta my seat at the stadium when I heard the song. I had been trying to get the Texans to, at least, play the track for a long time, but it never really happened. I suggested it to Barwin, and the rest is history. The nickname alone may not be the greatest , but the tie in to the song is what makes it awesome.
Oh and by the way, my twitter handle is actually @Louie_Guerra not @LouieGuerra.

    #BULLSONPARADE

LOL @ people giving me a thumbs down for my first comment…go ahead and hate…”bulls on parade” is NOT a new idea!…all it is, is a song from a band that’s been around since 1996

Aaron, Raqe Against the Machine has been around well before 1996. And it’s not just a song, it’s the anthem of our defense. Go Texans! Go Defense!! Bulls on Parade!!!!!!!!

Yeah I re-read what I wrote and it is misleading…the point was that “bulls on parade” the song is from ’96…and as far as Rage goes, no one cared who they were til that Album

References always make good nicknames. Just ask the “Iron Curtain”.

Correction, Aaron… people absolutely cared about Rage before the Evil Empire album was released. Their first, self-titled album was released in 1992 and went platinum shortly before Evil Empire came out.

During that time, Rage was asked and provided two original songs to major Hollywood motion pictures (“Darkness” a.k.a. “Darkness of Greed” for The Crow soundtrack and “No Shelter” recorded in 1995 and later released in 1997 for the Godzilla soundtrack) The success of Rage before Evil Empire helped that album reach platinum sales within a year and a half and paved the way for them to win a Grammy as well.

Know things before you say things. GO TEXANS!!!!!!
