Leinart, teammates support Movember

Posted by Nick Scurfield on November 5, 2011 – 12:06 pm

For Texans quarterback Matt Leinart and several of his teammates, November is Movember – mustache time.

Movember started in Melbourne, Australia, and has grown into a worldwide movement. In 2010, more than 64,500 US “Mo Bros and Mo Sistas” got on board, raising $7.5 million. Participants start the month with a clean shave on Nov. 1, then grow a mustache for the entire month and raise funds for prostate cancer along the way.

Fundraisers are divvied into teams to which interested parties can donate online. Leinart started “Team Magnum PIs” (named after USC alumnus Tom Selleck) with several of his teammates. He recruited the mustache services of nose tackle Shaun Cody, tight end Owen Daniels, kicker Neil Rackers and right guard Mike “Biscuit” Brisiel. Leinart has been actively promoting the cause via Twitter @MattLeinartQB.

“A good buddy of mine works for the organization, so I kind of found out about it through him initially, and then a close family member of mine actually just got diagnosed with prostate cancer,” Leinart said. “He’s going to be able to beat it and everything, but I just figured, ‘Shoot, it’s kind of a tribute to him from me,’ and actually my brother and my dad are going to do it and he’s going to do it, too. So it’s also just trying to help raise awareness for the cause, using Twitter and using a MoSpace app where you can have your own site where you can get donations and guys can look at it and stuff. It’s a pretty cool deal.”

Texans right tackle Eric Winston is also participating in Movember with a team of his own. It should be an interesting month of mustache competition in the Texans’ locker room.

“I think Biscuit and Cody already have that down, but give me about two weeks and I’ll be good,” Leinart said. “I’ve grown a full beard with a mustache for a while, but I’ve never had just a plain mustache. We’re just going to have fun with it as the month goes on.”

Daniels, who’s also participating in Movember for the first time, is excited to see how things develop over the next few weeks.

“I don’t clean shave a lot, but I did (Wednesday),” Daniels said. “I’m ready for this progression of the mustache… Maybe like the creepiest mustache I can do. I don’t know. I don’t grow mustaches often, so I’ll see how full it comes in and what I can do with it after that.”
