Johnson: “Mario can take over this league”

Posted by Nick Scurfield on August 23, 2011 – 9:59 am

In his weekly radio show on SportsRadio 610 AM on Monday, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak was asked about the play of Mario Williams at outside linebacker.

Kubiak had praised Williams on Sunday in a press conference at Reliant Stadium, but there has been considerable unrest among fans and media about Williams’ adjustment to the new position.

“Well, it is an adjustment, but I thought he definitely played pretty darn well the other night and I thought he did cause some havoc,” Kubiak said on the J&R show on Monday. “I mean, he pushed the pocket very well. I thought if you go back and look at the film that he did cause a lot of problems for them from the standpoint of pushing people around in the pocket, pushing people into (Drew) Brees’ hip. So I was encouraged by what I saw.

“It is a new thing for Mario. I know we’ve said this week in and week out, but I think he’s responding to what Wade (Phillips) and Reggie (Herring) want him to do, and as long as he keeps doing that, we’ll head in the right direction. Mario’s going to make a lot of plays for this football team, and I’m encouraged by what I see.”

Wide receiver Andre Johnson also was asked about Williams, who’s sixth in the NFL with 43.5 sacks since 2007, in a subsequent appearance on SportsRadio 610.

“I think Mario is doing well,” Johnson said. “I think a lot of people were wondering how was that going to happen by Mario being as big as he was… I think a lot of Mario. I think Mario’s a great player. He’s a beast of an athlete. And like I said – I continue to say it – Mario can take over this league. He has that type of talent, and that’s just what I expect out of him.”
