Texans coach Gary Kubiak rested quarterback Matt Schaub on Tuesday in the Texans’ first and only practice of their bye week.
That gave all the practice reps to second- and third-stringers Dan Orlovsky and Matt Leinart. Kubiak came away impressed with how far Leinart has come since joining the Texans just before the start of the season.
“He’s taken to how we teach a quarterback with his feet and how to read with his feet,” Kubiak said. “He’s getting more comfortable. He’s got a lot of confidence as a person. He’s got that ‘it’ factor when people are around him. You can see it. I’m excited about the direction of his career. I’m happy to have him.”
Kubiak said that Leinart, the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner at USC and former starter for the Arizona Cardinals, “continues to push (Orlovsky) every day” for the backup position. Players have been impressed with Leinart as well.
“He’s been great,” right tackle Eric Winston said. “He’s come in here and hasn’t expected much, but he’s come in and worked. You can see that he’s trying hard to learn the offense. The reps that he’s gotten, he’s trying to really better himself whether he’s going to get in there or not. I think that really says something about a player.”
